Abstract

579,032. Ammunition &c. receptacles. TREPUR PAPER TUBE CO., Ltd., WARBURTON, R. E. L., and KANE, W. March 24, 1938, No. 9011. [Classes 18 and 21] [Also in Group XXI] A ring for supporting an ammunition shell or like body in a container is formed in two complementary sections fitting together so that relative axial movement of the sections permits one of the sections to expand and release the body being supported or to contract and hold said body. As shown, the ring sections 1, 2 are formed with mutually engaging inclined surfaces 3, 4, the inner surface 6 of the inner ring section 2 engaging the tapered portion of the body to be supported. An annular flange 7 on the section 2 projects into an annular recess 8 in the section 1 and normally rests on the flat base 9 of such recess to which it is loosely secured by bolts or rivets 10 screwed into the section 1, passing through radial slots 12 in the flange 7 and extending above the surface of the flange so that the heads 11 limit the separating movement of the ring sections. The outer surface of flange 7 has a diameter slightly less than that of the recess 8, the wall of which is slightly inclined and one or more slots 13 are made in the section 2 to enable it to yield circumferentially. The composite ring is supported for axial movement in an annular recess formed between tubular elements 15, 16 in a cylindrical ammunition container 14. When the article is inserted into the container, the tapered portion thereof comes into engagement with the tapered inner section 2 and is securely held thereby, the ring being bedded at the base of the container recess as shown. On withdrawal of the article, upward axial movement of the composite ring into engagement with the upper wall of the container recess tends to strip the ring from the tapered portion of the body and further axial movement of the inner section 2 separates the ring sections at their inclined meeting surfaces, the angle of the latter and the clearance between the flange 7 and the adjacent inclined wall of the recess 8 then permitting the section 2 to expand sufficiently to free it from the tapered portion of the body.
