Abstract
579,029. Making machine details. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. March 28, 1945, No. 7861. Convention date, May 12, 1944. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group VI] To prevent choking in the rod former of a continuous-rod cigarettemaking machine, the tapered inner surface of the tobacco-compressing tongue 20 is roughened, pitted or indented. The roughenings &c. extend wholly or partly transverse to the tongue surface and may simulate diamond or straight knurling 22, and they may be provided only for a short distance from the smaller end of the tongue or may be increased at this end. The tongue may be formed from a flat tapering blank which is bent into channel form. To avoid tearing the edges of the cigarette paper, the longitudinal edges of the blank may be free of indentations. The roughening may be produced by engraving, etching, stamping, rolling or by blasting with small objects such as sand, shot, &c. or by projecting molten metal against the inner surface of the tongue or by securing abrasive particles to the tongue. As shown in Figs. 7, 9, the tongue 10 is soldered or brazed to a rib 17 arranged between guide plates 113 carried by an insert 111 adjustable longitudinally in a base member 112. The rib 17 has three lugs 18 carrying screws 19 which engage stop surfaces 120 and are adjusted laterally by screws 122, 123 and the rib is carried by a pivoted arm 125 and normally maintained above the insert 111 by a screw 124.
