This invention relates to cigarette machines and more particularly to an improved shaping means for the formation of the cigarette rod.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved shaping means which is so constructed that it will not retard the passage or movement of the cigarette rod during the compressing thereof.
In devices at present available the cigarette is formed in an elongated rod from which the desiredlengths of cigarette may be cut, the rod being of continuous formation, and during the formation of the rod it is found that the rod is not of even formation, and, due to the moisture content of the'tobacco, a film forms on the compressing and guide means therefor which serves to retard the movement of the rod. It is, therefore, another object of this invention to provide a forming or shaping means which may be used with present constructions of cigarette making machines which will prevent the forma-' tion of a film on the forming or shaping means, so that various kinds of tobacco may be used with the cigarette machine, with the kinds of tobacco having more or less moisture.
A further object of this invention is to provide as a new article of manufacture a forming or shaping means for use in cigarette machines which can be used as a substitute for the present forming or shaping means and which will make it unnecessary to readjust the machines for each kind of tobacco.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings, wherein like symbols refer to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal section, partly in front elevation, of a cigarette machine having a device constructed according to an embodiment of this invention mounted there- Figure 2 is an enlarged detail front elevation of the improved cigarette rod shaping device.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan of the device shown in Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 3.
Figure 5 is a bottom plan of a modified form of this device.
Figure 6 is an end elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral I designates generally a spreader or hopper forming part of a cigarette rod making machine. This spreader or hopper I is mounted on a frame I0, and a strip of cigarette paper II which is taken off'of a supply roll 2'is adapted to be moved along the bottom of the spreader or hopper I by means of an endless belt or conveyor I2; The belt or conveyor I2 passes over suitable guide rollers I3 and I4, the roller I4 being mounted on a drive shaft I5 which is connected to a suitable source of power supply. The strip II at the intake end of the spreader I passes over a roller 4, and. then engages within a U'-shaped trough or forming member I6 which is of such a construction as to gradually turn up the 1ongitudinal edges of the strip II with the tobacco mounted thereon.
The trough or forming member I6 is open at the top so that the free longitudinal edges of the filled U-shaped strip will extend upwardly. As this filled and U-shaped strip passes out from beneath the spreader I, the; final shaping process of the rod takes place.
In order to turn over the longitudinal edges of the open rod, there is provided a shaping member comprising an elongated member 5 which is provided on its under or lower surface with a semicircular groove which gradually tapers from the intake end which is adjacent the spreader I to the outlet end with the small end outermost. This grooved member 5 has a plate or supporting member 6 secured to the upper side thereof which is provided with a plurality of slots or elongated openings 1 through which bolts 8 or the like engage. The bolts 8 adjustably secure the plate 6 to a stationary support I! which is carried by the frame III.
The grooved under surface of the member 5 is provided with a plurality of spaced apart and longitudinally extending grooves or channels 9 which converge toward the discharge end of the member 5. As shown in Fig. 3 these channels 9 may be alternately long and short, with the long grooves extending the full length of the body 5 and the short grooves 9 terminating inwardly of the discharge. end of the body 5.
In Fig. 5 there is shown a modified form of this compressing and shaping member 5 wherein the body 5' is provided with alternate long and short grooves 9 and an additional series of short grooves 9 which terminate inwardly of the outer ends of the short grooves 9.
These grooves or channels 9, 9, and 9 provide longitudinally extending ribs on the under surface of the shaping member 5 and are of such a depth as not to affect the external configuration of the completed rod, but which are at the same time of sufiicient depth to permit the collection of moisture therein due to the compression of the moist tobacco within the strip l I. The formation of the rod engaging surface of the shaping member 5 as shown herein will tend to cause a Wiping of the ribs formed by the grooves 9, 9, and 9 in a lateral direction so that any moisture or film which may collect upon the ribs will be wiped into the grooves 9, 9, and 9 and it will, therefore, be evident that such process will not retard the movement of the rod, as is the case with shaping members which are smooth on their rod engaging surfaces.
It will, of course, be understood that this machine may have a suitable adhesive applying means which may be mounted between the spreader I and the shaping member 5, so that as the free edges of the Ushaped strip I I are rolled over and shaped into a round rod the outer edge will stick to the adjacent surface of the strip and thus retain the round configuration of the rod which may at a subsequent point be cut off into suitable lengths by a cutting means (not shown) It is apparent from the foregoing that the flutings or grooves on the under side of the shaping member may be of different widths and lengths, and that other changes may be made in the details of this invention, such changes and modifications being limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a cigarette machine, a shaping means comprising an elongated member having a longitudinally extending groove opening through the under surface thereof, said groove being substantially semi-circular in transverse section, and said member having a plurality of narrow grooves within said first groove.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a cigarette rod shaping means for use with a ciagerette machine, comprising an elongated member provided with a longitudinally extending groove opening through the under surface thereof, said groove tapering from one end of the member to the other end and said member having a plurality of narrow grooves within said first groove, and means carried by said member for attachment to the machine.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a cigarette rod shaping means for use with a cigarette machine, comprising an elongated member provided with a longitudinally extending groove on the under side thereof, said groove tapering from one end of the member to the other end, said member also having a plurality of longitudinally extending relatively narrow grooves within said first groove, certain of said relatively narrow grooves extending from end to end of the member and certain others of said relatively narrow grooves terminating inwardly of one end of the member, and means carried by said member for securing said member to the cigarette machine.
4:. As a new article of manufacture, a cigarette rod shaping means for use with a cigarette machine, comprising an elongated member provided with a longitudinally extending groove on the under side thereof, said groove tapering from one end of the member to the other end, said member also having a plurality of longitudinally extending relatively narrow grooves within said first groove converging from the large end of said first groove to the small end thereof, certain of said narrow grooves extending from end to end of the member and certain others of said narrow grooves terminating inwardly of one end of the member, and a longitudinally extending plate secured to said member, said plate having elongated openings to receive attaching means whereby said member may be adjusted with respect to the rod.
