Abstract

Articles of expanded (closed cell) thermoplastic and thermosetting resins are obtained by granulating scrap trimmings of such expanded material, coating or mixing the granules with a binder consisting of a solution or dispersion of rubber or similar vegetable resin or thermoplastic or thermosetting resin and uniting by pressure and causing the binder to set. Phenol-formaldehyde resin syrups, acid-hardening resins and cast phenolic resins are used as binders for scrap cellular ebonite.ALSO:Articles of cellular rubber and ebonite are obtained by granulating scrap trimmings of such expander material, coating or mixing the granules with a binder consisting of a solution or dispersion of rubber or similar vegetable resin or a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin and uniting by pressure and causing the binder to set. In an example, expanded ebonite is granulated to form cubes of 1/8 -\ba1/2 in. side, and is then mixed with half its weight of one-stage phenol-formaldehyde syrup, moulding and vulcanising; alternatively as binder an acid hardening resin or cast phenolic resin may be used. In a further example granulated expanded soft rubber may be mixed with half its weight of 50 per cent vulcanised latex and vulcanisation completed in a mould, the slabs being finally dried in a warm room.
