Abstract

Large articles, e.g., weighing up to 50 Kg., are made from thermoplastic material, e.g., polyamides, polythene, polystyrene, polyvinyl or polyvinylidene chloride as follows. The material is plasticized in a screw press where it is heated to the flow temperature. It is then fed from the press into a receiver which is at the flow temperature and from the receiver it is pressed as by a piston into a mould which also is at the flow temperature. The mould is cooled at the sprue gate to completely congeal the material, immediately after injection. The rest of the material is cooled slowly. Several moulds and receivers may be mounted on a turntable. The material may reach its flow temperature by friction in the nozzle of the screw press.
