Abstract

A moulded part of a polyolefin is produced by compressing a finely divided polyolefin or mixture of polyolefins to yield a shape-retaining pressing, and bringing at least two such pressings together under heat and pressure to yield a single part. The process is primarily applicable to the moulding of polyethylene having a molecular weight above 100,000 and preferably above 500,000, but plasticised polypropylene may also be used. The pressings may be in the form of rectangular prisms or circular discs, and may be of different colours for producing bodies of variegated colouring. In one example slabs of polyethylene of molecular weight 1,100,000 are formed by compressing particles in a die at 100 kg./sq. cm. pressure and at room temperature. Twenty slabs are placed side by side in a die and heated to 150 DEG C. for 6 hours under 10 kg./sq. cm. pressure to obtain a homogeneous sheet, alternatively the slabs may be heated prior to placing in a die and not or only slightly heated during the pressing. In a second example the slabs are placed one upon the other.
