Abstract

578,308. Impregnating timber. TRIGGS, W. W. (Bolidens Gruvaktiebolag). Feb. 6, 1943, No. 2002. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 9, 1943.] [Class 140] Apparatus for full-cell impregnation of timber &c. with preservative liquid, containing, e.g., arsenical compound as described in Specification 468,378, comprises a cylinder A for housing the timber, connected at one end through a valve D with a tank E containing the liquid, and at the other end with a pump B, designed to evacuate or compress, through a smaller container C which may be formed as a dome on cylinder A. In operation, with valve D closed, pump B is operated to evacuate container C and cylinder A. With the vacuum still maintained, valve D is opened so that liquid enters from E until A and C are full, as shown by an indicator F, an automatic valve G serving to prevent entry of liquid into pump B. Valve D is then closed, and pump B operated to produce pressure in C and A, thereby forcing the liquid into the material in A. When valve D is opened, the compressed air in C, assisted if desired by pump B, drives surplus liquid back into E. To reduce subsequent dripping, the material may finally be subjected for a short time to a vacuum by pump B. An alternative process is described starting with valve D open. The plant may be provided with known means for drying, steaming &c. and for heating the liquid. Specification 25682/13, [Class 140], also is referred to.
