[Class 95] Coating compositions are prepared by melting colophony with sulphur, dissolving the molten mass in a hydrocarbon, and boiling the resultant material with aluminium oxide, alumnium hydroxide, or a salt containing aluminium. By treatment with suphur, the melting point of the colophony is raised, and its viscosity in petroleum solution is greatly increased. Specified hydrocarbon solvents are petroleum, white spirit, naphtha, and the coal-tar fraction boiling at 230-270‹C. Specified aluminium salts are aluminium chloride, calcium aluminate, and an aluminium hydrocarbonate obtained by precipitating a soluble aluminium salt with sodium carbonate, separting in a moist state, and dehydrating in vacuo. The content of free resin acids may be reduced by adding an alkaline earth oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, and boiling. The coating compositions obtained have good spreading qualities, are compatible with pigments, and give durable and elastic films.
