Abstract

577,414. Planing wood. MAJOR, G. L., and BURNS, R. June 6, 1944, No. 10855. [Class 145 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A machine for levelling press blocks 4 such as are used in cutting-out presses comprises a work-table 2 which is moved by a screw-and-nut mechanism over a bed 3 past a rotary abrasive member 8 mounted in bearings 10 in a carrier 11 which is vertically adjustable by means of a screw 15 and nut 16. The member 8 is rotated by means of a motor 21 and belt or other gearing, and the screw 6 can be driven by worm gearing operated by a hand-wheel 23, or by a motor 28 which may give a quick return. The rasp elements 9, Fig. 4, may be arranged in dovetail grooves in the members 8 and secured in position by screws, and the rasp teeth 32 are set in rows inclined to the longitudinal leading edge 9b, with the cutting edges 31 inclined in the opposite direction to the rows. The teeth of the rasp may be of elongated shape, or as shown in Fig. 6 rasps 9 shorter than the cylinder 8 extend alternately from the cylinder ends in staggered formation ; or a plurality of rasps may be inclined in staggered formation.
