United States Patent MACHINE HAVING A CUTTER HEAD SLIDABLY MOUNTED ON A POST Percy Leonard, Milford, N. H., assignor to Williams &

2 Claims. (Cl. 144-130) This invention relates to machines having a guide and a part slidably mounted on the guide, and more particularly to machines, such as planers for example, which have a bed over which stock is fed and a post extending upwardly above the level of the bed for slidably supporting a cutter head for adjustment toward and from the bed.
Objects of the invention are to provide a scale for indicating the position of the part relatively to the guide which is simple and economical in construction, which can be mounted directly on the guide without interfering with the sliding movement of the cutter head or other part, which is protected from injury by accidental contact and which is durable and reliable in use.
According to this invention the aforesaid guide is provided with a longitudinal recess in one side and the scale is mounted in the recess wholly within the cross-sectional outline of the guide so as not to intefere with the sliding movement of the part on the guide, whereby the position of the part is indicated by the relationship of an edge of the part to the scale. In the case of a cutter head slidably mounted on a post for adjustment toward and from a bed, preferably the scale is so calibrated and positioned on the post that the relationship of the upper edge of the cutter head to the scale indicates the distance between the cutter and the bed.
For the purpose of illustration a typical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is an elevational view of a wood planer such as disclosed in the copending application of Thurston Williams, Sr. No. W-7230 filed on even date herewith; and
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
The particular embodiment of the invention chosen for thepurpose of illustration comprises a bed 1, two posts 2 projecting upwardly above the level of the bed, a cutter head 3 slidably mounted on the post, a cross piece 4 interconnecting the upper ends of the post, a screw 5 journaled in the cross piece 4 and threading into the head 2,780,250 Patented Feb. 5, 1957 "ice 3 to adjust the head toward and from the bed and a handle 5 for rotating the screw.
According to the present invention one of the posts is provided with a longitudinal recess and in the recess is mounted a scale 6 by means of screws 7 at its upper and lower ends, the depth of the recess being slightly greater than the thickness of the scale so that the scale is disposed wholly within the cross-sectional outline of the post so as not to interfere with the sliding movement of the cutter head on the post. The scale is so calibrated and positioned on the post to indicate the distance between the bed 1 and the cutter head 3 by the relationship of the edge of the upper surface 8 of the bed to the scale.
According to this invention the post serves not only as a guide for the cutter head but also as a support for the scale, and by mounting the scale as aforesaid it not only does not interfere with the movement of the cutter head but it is protected from injury by accidental contact with tools, stock and the like.
It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only and that this invention includes all modifications and equivalents which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A machine comprising an elongate guide having a longitudinal recess in one side, a part slidably mounted on the guide in sliding engagement with said side, and a scale mounted in said recess wholly within the crosssectional outline of the guide so as not to interfere with the sliding movement of said part on the guide, whereby the position of the part is indicated by the relationship of an edge of the part in front of the scale.
2. A machine comprising a bed over which stock is fed, a post extending upwardly above the level of the bed, a cutter head slidably mounted on the post for adjustment toward and from the bed, the head surrounding the post, said post having a longitudinal recess in one side, and a scale mounted in said recess wholly within the cross-sectional outline of the post so as not to interfere with the sliding movement of the cutter head on the post, whereby the distance from the cutter head to the bed is indicated by the position of the cutter longitudinally of the post.
