Abstract

577,374. Sound-deadening chambers. DAVEY, PAXMAN & CO., Ltd., and PAXMAN, E. P. July 31, 1944, No. 14596. [Class 20 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXVII] A sound insulating casing for an internal combustion engine or a small power plant comprises a movable hood adapted to be moved into position to co-operate with a fixed wall or partition to make a complete sound insulating enclosure for the engine. A bulkhead 17 constituting the wall or partition and the casing 3, which may be made of steel, aluminium, light alloy or a plastic material, are lined with sound insulation, e.g., bricks, slabs of the material known as " Cellotex " or felt. The hood is moved into position on wooden or rubber-tyred metal wheels 8 which are mounted on eccentrics capable of being rotated by a handle 13 to lift the wheels when the hood is in position. The wheels are arranged inside a guard 7 and run on rails formed of angle iron which are mounted on concrete side walls of the engine pit themselves supported on cork or other yieldable material. In a modification a plate lined inside with sound proof pads extends from the bulkhead and is arranged so as to form a labyrinth passage with the outside edge of the casing for the combustion air. The casing may be divided transversely, the lower part being fixed. The engine piping and remote controls may pass through recesses at the joint of the two parts and be fixed to the lower part in sound insulating bushes.
