Abstract

577,318. Gun ammunition. SILLITTO, G. P., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 23, 1943, No. 4710. [Class 9 (i)] A dummy charge which is expelled rear- , wardly and disintegrates harmlessly on the discharge of an open-breech firearm, to eliminate recoil, comprises a main package 3 of powder packed in an easily rupturable container of smaller diameter than the barrel 1 of the firearm, and an auxiliary package 15 juxtaposed to the main package but tapered so as to fit the barrel, thereby providing obturation on electrical ignition of the propellant charge by a firing switch (not shown), leads 9, 10 and fuze-head 8, to discharge the projectile 5 which has tail fins 13. The containers for the main and auxiliary dummy charges may consist of waxed paper, bitumen, laminated paper &c. or of very thin metal foils and the dummy charges may be powdered chalk, gypsum, dry sifted earth, limestone fines, powdered talc, ochre, china clay, flour, sawdust, sand or denser powders such as powdered barytes, white lead powder, red lead powder or powdered metallic lead. The main and auxiliary dummy packages are secured by a layer of adhesive 16 and the assembly is provided with a wax coating by dipping. Specifications 577,319, 577,320, and 577,321 are referred to.
