577,308. Cooling-towers. MITCHELL, F. G. Nov. 6, 1944, No. 18858. Divided out of Complete Specification of 573,321. [Class 64 (i)] In a cooling tower comprising a vertical hollow shell 10 in the lower part of which is an open framework 18 over which warm water or other liquid falls and is cooled by air entering through apertures 16 near the bottom of the tower and rising under natural draught, slanting louvres 37 arranged at or near the level of the tops df the apertures 16 form a plurality of rectilinear ducts 38, 40 parallel to a diameter of the tower, to two diameters at right-angles to one another, or to more than two diameters, the ducts being open at one or both ends to the apertures 16. In the form shown, each louvre 37 is associated with a vertical partition 36, and the louvres, partitions and ducts parallel to one diameter extend right across the tower whilst the shorter ducts 40 at rightangles to them occupy the segments at each side. In another form, the vertical partitions 36 are omitted, and the louvres 37, which are all parallel to one diameter, are supported either by a metal framework composed of concentric rings carried by vertical columns, or by rectilinear supports.
