Abstract
577,181. Silicon crystal contacts. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., JONES, D. E., RANSLEY, C. E., RYDE, J. W., and WILLIAMS, S. V. Aug. 20, 1941, Nos. 10624 and 13432. [Class 90] A crystal contact consists of silicon freed from the usual impurities, in which is incorporated a small amount of metal forming a solid solution with silicon and having a stable oxide. Aluminium and beryllium are suitable. The mixture is preferably melted in a crucible of pure beryllia. The surface is polished, oxidised under controlled conditions, and treated with hydrofluoric acid to remove most of the oxide. Part of the surface is then coated with metal to facilitate soldering the crystal into a cup. A plurality of metal points connected in parallel may be used in contact with the crystal. Specification 589,592 is referred to.
