Abstract

577,114. Heatexchangers. ROBERTSON, J. H. Dec. 28, 1943, No. 21716. [Class 64 (iii)] In a heat exchange apparatus, e.g., for cooling oil or abstracting heat from the induction mixture of an aircraft engine, in which the matrix is composed of tubes arranged in cellular groups or bundles through and between which the fluids flow, each group or bundle comprising primary surfaces swept on opposite sides by the two fluids and secondary surfaces swept on both sides by the same fluid, each cellular group or bundle comprises at least two rows of two or more separate individual tubes a assembled as parallel elements, with primary surfaces formed by the exposed walls b of the outer tubes and imperforate secondary surfaces c each formed by two tube walls in metallic contact with one another. The tubes may be of square, hexagonal or other polygonal crosssection. An oil-cooler, Fig. 2, is' composed of groups of tubes A, B, C arranged within inner and outer cylindrical casings e, f. The oil passages between the groups of tubes are closed at the front and rear by a wire grid or pressed metal grille, and between the front and rear there may be similar grids or grilles, together with annular partitions between the outer groups of tubes and inner casing e, to form baffles. The annular partitions contain apertures j<1> for the passage of oil. The width of the vertical passages between the groups of tubes is proportionate to the length of the vertical chord through it, to keep the resistance to the flow the same in all paths. Strips k prevent oil from by-passing the passages between groups of tubes. The space between the casings e, f forms a by-pass through which oil flows when a relief valve opens under excessive oil pressure. The outer casing f is stiffened by annular ribs h of channel cross-section. Specification 159,388, [Class 64 (iii)], is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification the primary or secondary surfaces or both may be indented or corrugated.
