Abstract

576,941. Directive wireless signalling; radiolocation. DOWSETT, H. M. Sept. 24, 1940, No. 14509. [Class 40 (v)] Apparatus for producing an electromagnetic beam having two concentric parts, comprises a single dipole and separate reflector systems so constructed that the complete beam retains the individual divergent character of the two concentric parts for the whole of its length. The dipole AOB is arranged at one focus of a double ellipsoidal reflector CD, part of the radiation being focused at S by the reflector C, and the other part being focused by the reflector D at the point P from which it passes to a further ellipsoidal reflector E which focuses it at the same point S, thus producing two concentric divergent beams. In a modified arrangement, the reflector E is paraboloidal, producing a hollow cylindrical beam within the divergent beam. The dipole is rigidly mounted on the reflector which is mounted on trunnions so that it can be moved like a searchlight. For receiving the reflected rays, a pair of crossed dipoles R1, R2, Fig. 2, and associated reflector wires may be mounted on the reflector axis behind or in front of the transmitting dipole where there is no radiation.
