575,990. Plywood; compound sheet materials. KELSON, S. Aug. 4, 1943, No. 12615. [Class 140] Plywood or laminated fabric, paper or similar materials of flat, curved or concave shapes or domed or curved in two intersecting directions is produced by placing veneers coated with adhesive upon a base or former, covering the assembly with a flexible sheet as of rubber, metal or plastic material secured around its periphery to the base or former and. causing the layers of the assembly to unite by applying fluid pressure to the assembly as in an autoclave or by applying a vacuum within the assembly and at the same time subjecting the surface of the flexible sheet to infra-red radiation as from infra-red projectors. The veneers may be built up from abutting shaped pieces. As adhesive thermosetting resins such as phenol formaldehyde glues may be used. To increase absorption of infra-red rays the flexible sheet may be of red rubber or may be coated, say red or black, or if transparent may have a backing of red or black paper. The invention includes also a method of determining with a test assembly the conditions necessary for operation using a small block as former, a single infra-red radiator, and thermocouples to measure the temperature at opposite sides of the assembly. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 456,966, 500,700 and 504,266.
