Abstract

575,868. Lead pencils. FERST, Ltd., M. A. April 19, 1944, No. 7203. Convention date, May 19, 1943. Drawings to Specification. [Class 146 (iii)] Graphitic pencils are made so as to be porous and the pores are filled with an impregnant which may act as a colouring agent, the pencil being formed by mixing graphite with a binding material such as clay and with a distending material which is capable of being reduced by volatilization, by charring, or by extraction by means of a solvent. The distending material may comprise soaps, vegetable dust or fibre, and synthetic fibres, which are reduced in firing of the lead. Powdered naphthalene, waxes, or sulphur may be used and be reduced during or before firing. Finely divided metal, or metallic salts of copper or the noble metals may be used, and the fired lead is treated with weak acid to remove the fine metal particles. The lead is formed into rods by moulding or extrusion, and the firing or acid treatment carried out subsequently, and then the impregnant is introduced. This may take the form of oils or waxy materials, and a colouring material may be used which may be such as to make indelible marks, or the impregnant may contain an ionogen and will produce marks which conduct electricity.
