Abstract

Materials for the construction of aircraft runways, roads, floors, and like surfaces for the purpose of conferring water-repellent properties, consist of a mixture of at least two powdered ingredients from the following groups: (a) water-soluble salts of water-insoluble carboxylic acids, (b) water-soluble salts of polyvalent metals, (c) water-insoluble polyvalent metal salts of carboxylic acids produced by interaction of materials from groups (a) and (b), (d) water-insoluble carboxylic acids, and (e) salts of acidic polyvalent metal oxides which are either water-soluble or are decomposed by water into a water-soluble base and a water-insoluble polyvalent metal hydroxide, provided that (i) if ingredients from only two groups are used, they shall not be chosen from groups (a) and (d), (b) and (d) or (b) and (e); (ii) ingredients from at least two groups shall be included unless two or more ingredients from group (c) are employed; and (iii) that a substance from group (a) may be replaced by a mixture of the carboxylic acid and sodium carbonate, soda ash, or other non-hygroscopic substance capable of producing a water-soluble salt of the carboxylic acid. Suitable substances specified are sodium rosinate, sodium stearate, or the sodium salts of modified alkyd resins from group (a), aluminium sulphate and ferrous sulphate from group (b), aluminium rosinate, aluminium stearate, and ferrous stearate from group (c), resin and stearic acid from group (d), and sodium aluminate, ferrite, or zincate from group (e). According to examples, mixtures of the sodium salt of wood rosin and aluminium sulphate, the aluminium and sodium salts of wood rosin, wood rosin, sodium carbonate and aluminium sulphate, and sodium aluminate and wood rosin or its sodium salt may be used. The mixture, to which may be added a dry diluent such as sand, is applied to the moist ground or to a laid surface of soil, sand, ashes, ground cinders, stone dust, or the like, the ground having been harrowed prior to the application and being subsequently consolidated as by rolling. Alternatively, the mixture may be mixed with the ground materials, together, if desired, with binding materials such as asphalt, bitumen, or anhydrous calcium sulphate and compressed into blocks.
