Abstract

575,630. Lubrication; crank-chambers. DEHN, F. B. (Hart-Carter Co.). Jan. 13, 1944, No. 699. [Class 7 (ii)] An outboard motor having a support about which it may be pivoted forwardly to an inoperative position, comprises an internal combustion engine provided with a crank-case 15, Fig. 3, an oil reservoir 14 below the crank-case when the motor is in its operating position, a drain opening 38 between the crank-case and the reservoir and means for feeding the oil from the reservoir to parts in the crank-case to be lubricated, the top of the reservoir having a flange 41 extending inwardly from the upper edge of the front wall 39 to form a front receptacle adapted to contain the major portion of the oil normally in the reservoir when the motor is tilted forwards. Corresponding flanges such as 41<1> extend inwards from the other walls of the reservoir to provide similar accommodation when the motor is on its side. A central boss upstanding from the base of the reservoir supports a raw-hide seal 32, surrounding the crank-shaft 20, a gear 24 on which drives a gear 25, Fig. 1, on a cam-shaft 26 having at its lower end an eccentric 45 adapted to reciprocate the piston 46 of an oil pump. A groove 49 in the periphery of the eccentric puts a filter 51, communicating with the reservoir 14, and passages 52, 53 in the camshaft into communication with a bore 50 in the piston 46 when the piston is at its outermost position, oil being thus drawn into the pump cylinder 47. A second peripheral groove transmits the oil to a further axial bore 56 in the cam-shaft, which delivers it to the bearings, as the piston moves inwards. Surplus oil draining back to the reservoir is thrown clear of the crank-shaft by a disc 37 thereon which slings it out towards the openings 38.
