Abstract
575,072. Finishing fabrics. COURTAULDS Ltd.. CLULEY, A. S., and ALLEN, T. G. Feb. 25, 1944. No. 3516 [Class 42 (i)] A process for the production of a fabric with a "soft handle" comprises subjecting a moistured fabric containing blends of wool fibres and plasticizer-containing cellulose acetate staple fibres to a milling process. The plasticizer, which may be dimethyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, diacetone alcohol &c. may be introduced into the cellulose acetate fibres either before or during the milling process, e.g., it may be added to the solution wherewith the fabric is moistened prior to milling. The plasticizer may be applied in the form of a solution or an emulsion. In an example, a fabric knitted from wool and cellulose acetate staple fibre was impregnated with 40 volumes of a solution containing 20 grams per litre of diacetone alcohol for 30 minutes at room temperature and then squeezed until it contained its own weight of solution. It was then impregnated with a solution containing 50 grams per litre of sodium oleate and again squeezed until it contained its own weight of liquid. It was then milled for 30 minutes at ordinary temperatures. It is stated that the resultant fabric showed considerably more area shrinkage than if the treatment with the plasticizer had not been effected. Specification 356,681, [Group IX], is referred to.
