Abstract

574,617. Pens. BODDY, J. Feb. 9, 1944, Nos. 2372 and 23801. [Class 146 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] A pen nib or stylo has its writing point tipped with hard chromium to increase its wear resisting properties. The nib may be made from a single strip of metal in such a way that the point is thicker than the body of the nib. This may be effected by swaging or pressing a rectangular blank of an original thickness equal to the required thickness of the point so that the body part 11, Fig. 3 is of a reduced thickness. The nib is then stamped from the blank and passed between a pair of shaped rollers to impart the transverse curvature to the nib. The slit in the nib is formed by pressing the nib between pairs of dies, Figs. 7 and 8, each pair comprising a fixed die b, c and a movable die a, d, spring pressed stop pins 18 being provided in the dies c d for positioning the nib. The nib is then inserted between a pair of dies for punching a hole at the inner end of the slit. Chromium is then deposited on the nib point in a suitable bath.
