[Class 64 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIX] In a heat-exchange system for attemperating air supplied to the cabins of aircraft and other vehicles, a stream of air is delivered under pressure to one side of a heat-exchanger and a stream of heating or cooling gases is delivered to the other side, and automatic controlling means maintain the pressure of the air being heated or cooled in the exchanger above the pressure of the heating or cooling gases entering it, irrespective of variations in the absolute pressure of the ventilating air and/or of the heating or cooling gases. Air is supplied by a fan 1 to a heat-exchanger 2, with an outlet duct 4 leading to the aircraft cabin, and hot exhaust gases and cooling air are reapplied through passages 5, 6 to the other side of the heat-exchanger. A cylinder 16 containing a spring-pressed piston 18 is connected on one side of the piston by a pipe 21 to the outlet 4 for the heated or cooled air from the heatexchanger, and on the other side of the piston by the pipe 20 to the inlet 7 for hot gases and cooling air. If the pressure in the outlet 4 falls below that necessary to balance the pressure of the spring and that of the hot gases and cooling air, the piston will move to close the damper 13, which has a stop 14. Dampers 8, 11 operated by a thermostat 9 in the cabin, respectively control the quantities of exhaust gases and cooling air supplied to the heatexchanger, and the quantities of exhaust gases passing to the bypass 10. As the flow of hot gases to the exchanger increases, that to the bypass decreases. The exhaust gases may be forced or drawn through the heat-exchanger by a fan or the like which develops a lower pressure than the air compressor. The fan may be governed directly or indirectly by the air compressor, e.g. by a mechanical governor or by a solenoid energised by a generator driven in unison with the air compressor. Means for filtering the air, adjusting its relative humidity, and re-circulating a part of it, may be provided.
