Abstract

753,194. Ventilating aircraft.. GARRETT CORPORATION. Oct. 26, 1954 [Nov. 17, 1.953], No. 30831/54. Class 137. In an air-conditioning system, particularly for aircraft, compressed air flows from a conduit 20 to the space 10 to be ventilated, via a path having an upstream part 25, 26, 29, 30, 38, and a downstream part 22, the two parts being in heat-exchange relationship. The downstream part of the path has a by-pass 50 around the heat exchange means, the by-pass being controlled by a butterfly valve 51, and the conduit 38 includes pressure and temperature sensitive elements 53, 54 which vary the resistances of two arms of a Wheatstone bridge, and, through a relay 58, control a reversible motor 52 which actuates the valve 51. The invention is particularly directed to the prevention of ice formation where the air temperature is reduced by expansion. In the present system, the air expanded in the turbine 24 and further expanded in the flared part 23 of the heat-exchange chamber, is prevented from depositing ice upon the walls of the chamber by the jacket 25 which receives comparatively warm air from the conduit 20. The valve 51, likewise, is warmed by this air, and icing thereof is prevented. The compressed air may be supplied from a jet engine 12, boosted by a compressor 14 driven by the turbine 24, and passed through a heat-exchanger 16 using rammed air 17 as coolant. Baffles 40, 41 in the conduit 38 separate water from the air, a pipe 44, connected to the collecting trough 42, supplying a spray nozzle 45 in the coolant air stream of the heat-exchanger 16, the coolant air being thus reduced in temperature by the evaporation of the spray. The amount of water available for spraying depends upon the original humidity of the air, and the cooling effect of the exchanger is thus greater when the original humidity is higher. The element 53 comprises a bellows connected to the slider of a variable resistance which is one of the arms of the Wheatstone bridge, the second variable arm being the element 54 which may be a resistance the value varies linearly with temperature.
