Abstract

574,463. Piezo - electric crystals. BRUSH DEVELOPMENT CO. Jan. 11, 1944, No. 525. Convention date, Jan. 11, 1943. [Class 40 (v)] A method of electroding a fusible piezoelectric crystal element 3 comprises providing one face, over less than its total area, with a layer 5 of conductive material such as colloidal graphite, providing the layer with a boundary element 7 of metal foil formed with a lead extension, and heating the boundary element sufficiently to fuse the adjacent part of the crystal surface so as to autogenously weld the element 7 to the crystal and to the electrode area 5. The welding operation is shown in Fig. 3 in which a boundary element 7 is placed between two crystal plates 1, 3, each provided with a central electrode, the assembly being held by a weight 13 on a non-conducting support 11. Heating is performed by inducing a high-frequency current in the boundary element by means of a coil 15 energized by a generator 17 controlled by a time switch 19. Alternatively, the heating may be performed by passing a current directly through the boundary element which is then made as an open loop providing two lead conductors. The method may be used to make a multiple stack of crystal plates, and is applicable to all fusible piezo-electric crystals such as Rochelle salt and isomorphous substances and the primary arsenates and phosphates of sodium, potassium and ammonium. Specifications 318,934, [Class 40 (v)], 454,595, 485,135 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,168,943 and Re. 20,213 are referred to.
