5 74, 1 19. Variable - speed gearing. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and VICKERMAN, T. Jan. 7, 1944, No. 306. [Class 80 (ii)] In a change-speed gear-box, lubricant is supplied only to the pair or pairs of gears under load. In the Figure, lubricant is supplied under pressure into a chamber j from whence it is controlled by an annular groove i<1> in the selector rod i to pass through ports n or p to be directed onto either gears f, d or g, e, whichever pair is engaged. By suitable arrangements of the passages and ports, the supply of lubricant to any number of pairs of gears can be controlled. In a gear-box utilising constantmesh gears, the ones under load only are jet 'lubricated, the lubrication of the others relying upon splash.
