Abstract
573,732. Universal joints. TIMKENDETROIT AXLE CO. Jan. 28, 1943, No. 1486. Convention date, Feb. 9, 1942. [Class 65 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXI] Lubricating: dust-excluding covers. A flexible boot for retaining lubricant in pivoted joints, e.g., a universal joint in a steering mechanism, comprises an annular corrugated member having flattened portions 55 adjacent each pivot. The lower flattened portion is reinforced by ribs 58, 59. The edges of the boot are beaded at 28, 38 and clamped in grooves in the relatively movable parts 10, 16 of the joint; the clamps being retained in position by beads 31, 32 and 39, 41. A tongue 40 on the bead 38 engages a recess in member 16 to ensure proper positioning of the boot. The corrugation 48 is enlarged locally at 49 adjacent the top pivot to avoid contact with the securing means for the inner clamping ring. The boot may be split and the parts connected by a sliding-clasp fastener to facilitate assembly. Studs 25, carried by a plate secured to the housing protect the boot against obstructions.
