Abstract
In a smoking article, a part of the tobacco filler is in the form of a film, coating &c. consisting of finely divided or colloidal-like particles. Tobacco leaves are broken up and dry-ground in a ball mill or in a plate or disc colloidal mill, the product being mixed with 6-8 times its weight of water or other neutral liquid to form a slurry. Alternatively, the grinding may be effected in the presence of the water &c. If the slurry is not to be used at once, a preservative is added to prevent fermentation. The slurry may be heat treated in an autoclave to hydrate the tobacco if this has not been effected previously. Tobacco leaves or leaf portions to be coated are dipped in the slurry but it is preferred to spray shredded tobacco whilst being tumbled in a rotating drum. In either case the product is dried to remove excess moisture. The filling may be treated before or after being formed into its final shape, coating in the latter instance being applied to the binder or wrapper or to both. Specification 570,265 is referred to.
