Abstract
572,705. Incinerators. IMBER, J., and IMBER RESEARCH, Ltd. July 14, 1941, No. 8893. [Class 126] Apparatus for destroying mails, documents, etc., in an aircraft or ship, to prevent them from falling into enemy hands, comprises a receptacle 1 containing open-ended cylinders 2 in which the mails, etc., are placed and retained by cross wires 3. Among the mails, etc., are disposed combustible materials preferably in the form of paper strips to which an oxygen evolving substance such as potassium nitrate is applied by means of an adhesive. Ignition is effected by a perforated tube 4 arranged at one end of the receptacle and containing a filling of inflammable material ignited by a percussion cap and striker 5 actuated by a wire or cord 6. The other end of the receptacle has a removable cover 9 lined with an asbestos disc 11 and carrying one end of a fuse 20 which extends partly in the form of a coil 14 arranged in a housing 12 to a cartridge 17 disposed in a housing 13 on the cover. When the combustion of the mails &c. spreads to the fuse the explosive charge 18 of the cartridge is subsequently ignited and a charge of small shot is fired through the asbestos disc 11 into the receptacle to spatter the charred fragments. The percussion device may be of the kind described in Specification 551,208, [Growp XXI].
