[Classes 92 (ii) and 119] To avoid vibration during firing, the barrel of an automatic rifle or machine gun is mounted within or upon a rigid beam-member with supporting-means at the muzzle and at points between the latter and the breech. As shown in Fig. 2, the portion of the rifle barrel 1 projecting beyond the stock-pivot b is enclosed by a tubular beam-member 2 which is spaced by end supporting-collars 3, 5 and an intermediate collar, or series of webs 4. The sleeve 2 is provided with vents 6 and may be formed with stiffening-ribs. Fig. 7 shows a modification in which the beam-member is of shallow channel section with integral barrel-supports 3, 4 and a deep stiffening-rib 2a.
