[Class 130] In a machine for stemming tobacco leaves such as that described in Specification 558,827, the carding pins 13, which hold the leaf transversely with its stem in the path of drawing rollers 1, are mounted-close to one side of their carrying belt to reduce the amount of leaf lying between them and the rollers 1. The pins 13 are mounted on a base 11 carried by channel members 4 and each channel member has an outstanding pin 5 carrying a pair of collars 7 enclosed between side plates or links 6 which connect adjacent links to form a chain and are separated from the channel member 4 by stiffening plates 8 in staggered relationship to the plates 6, from one another intermediately of the pin by spacing plates 9 continuous with the plates 8, and from the side plates 15, of a guideway 14 supporting the belt, by outer plates 10. Stiffening plates 16 at the inner side of the channel members 4 space these members from the inner side plate 15 of the guideway 14 and ride on guide plates 17 while the collars 7 roll along steel inserts 18 projecting from the guideway 14 which may be adjusted vertically by a screw stud 20. The pitch lines of the belt and chain portions are concentric.
