Abstract
572,576. Sound deadening in buildings. JACOBSON, V. March 29, 1943, No. 5046. [Class 20 (ii)] An acoustical construction adapted to be placed in the path of sound waves issuing from a factory or a testing:house for internal combustion engines so as to absorb and dissipate the sound, comprises a stacked mass of porous blocks assembled to form confined non-planar passages for the passage of the sound. In one example Fig. 1, the blocks 4 of porous material are provided with tapered edges, which, when the blocks are erected on supports such as 1, form recesses 6 disposed in a direction along the height of the wall; these recesses and the apertures 7 in the blocks break up the sound waves and cause dissipation. The blocks may have sides which taper and may be superposed to form ledges 13 facing upwardly, or downwardly, or in both directions as shown in Fig. 6. The blocks may be of cruciform section and the vertical faces may be tapered to form ledges when they are superposed, the blocks also having vertical aligning apertures which can be left hollow or filled with sound absorbing material The superposed blocks having tapered side faces, may be provided alternatively with long and short wings so that when superposed passages 21, Fig. 10, at right angles to the main vertical passages between the blocks may be provided, the projecting ends of the wings being recessed at their edges to receive the supporting angles 20 for the projections. The blocks may be hollow with internally and externally inclined vertical faces so that when superposed in directions at right angles vertical and horizontal connected passages are formed to dissipate the sound. The vertical edges of the hollow blocks may be provided with projections 26, Fig. 16, which abut to form hollows 27 between the blocks and internal ledges inside the passages. The blocks may be of hexagonal section or polygonal section to form main channels and subsidiary vertical channels 31, Fig. 19. between the blocks; and the blocks may have vertical faces which taper inwardly from each end toward the centre and be provided with internal end and central ribs 35, 36, Fig. 21 respectively.
