Abstract

572,551. Metal cans for food etc.; packing boxes. BACH, R. G. and PATON, J. R. Sept. 30, 1943, No. 16071. [Classes 18, 66 and 94 (i)] A can for food &c. is made by press-drawing a strip or blank to form a body having a base 18, Fig. 2, integral with diverging sides 19, which are flanged at 21 and which fit a depression in a flanged lid such that the body and lid can be seamed together in a vacuum double seamer, after exhaustion which is facilitated by corrugations 22, Figs. 2 and 4, in the flanges 21 to keep the lid raised prior to seaming. The divergence of the sides 19 facilitates withdrawal of the forming-tool and permits nesting prior to filling. Ribs or corrugations 20 strengthen the base, they may locate internal "egg-box partitions, and interlock with complementary ribs, &c. in the lid of the next lower can when filled cans are stacked. A number of such stacks may be packaged by securing them, between two trays, one at the top and one at the bottom, by two or more metal straps. The cans may be of steel, blackplate, tinplate, or aluminium, &c., and the contents may be heat-treated after seaming, without external balancing pressure.
