Abstract

Bricks, boards and other shaped objects are prepared by mixing ashes, or mixtures of ashes with clinker crushed bricks or burnt clay, with the lime-containing sludge which is a waste product in the manufacture of acetylene from calcium carbide, pressing, rolling or extruding the mixture and then treating the shaped masses with steam. The proportions are from 97-40 to 3-60 respectively, the prepared mixture consisting of 10 per cent sludge from the carbide and 90 per cent ashes. Before shaping, hardening, weather-proofing, strengthening or reinforcing agents may be added to the mixture. When crushed bricks are added, they are preferably weathered for about 3 months.
