Abstract

571,497. Electrolytic cells. CONSOLIDATED MINING & SMELTING CO. OF CANADA, Ltd. July 8, 1942, No. 9484. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1941. [Class 41] [Also in Group V] A combined gas collector and cell cover for electrolytic cells of the tank type is moulded from reinforced concrete. The invention is described in connection with the cell described in Specification 539,992, the cell cover, as shown in perspective, part sectional, in Fig. 1 and in sectional end elevation in Fig. 2, comprising sides 1, 2, a top 3 and a base 4. A gas-tight partition 5 divides the cover into a hydrogencollecting chamber 9 and an oxygen-collecting chamber 10, the floors of the chambers sloping upwardly towards the partition. Cathodes 12 and anodes 13 are welded or riveted to supporting rods 14 which pass through bores 15 in the partition 5 and are secured by counter-sunk nuts and washers 16 which are covered with cement grout to present a smooth surface. Each anode is provided with a porous diaphragm 21 of woven asbestos cloth which is secured in a groove 23 in the underside of the base. An asbestos skirting 25 secured to the base surrounds the electrodes. Formed in the base, or either side of the partition 5, are alternating channels 19a, 20a and slots 19, 20, the slots extending completely through the base and forming gas ports. The channels 19a on the right hand side of the partition are aligned with the slots 19 on the left hand side of the partition and vice versa. Spacers 28 separate the electrodes from the base. Spacers 28a clipped on tothe anodes help to shape the diaphragm bags 21 and prevent the bags from touching the anodes. Spacers 28b prevent the electrodes from swinging. Gas pipe couplings 11, 11a are embedded in the top 3. Samples of gas may be withdrawn from pipe 65. A pipe 67 provides an indication of the height of the electrolyte. Bus-bars 17, 18 pass through tapered slots in the top 3, the slots being made gas-tight with cement grout. Pipes 66 extending downwardly on each side of the asbestos skirting 25 ensure circulation of the electrolyte. A mould for making the cover is described (see Group V).
