Abstract

571,183. Coating non-metallic surfaces. PROTECTIVE METAL FINISHERS, Ltd., and BERGSTEIN, G. K. Nov. 3, 1943, No. 18175. [Class 95] Also in Group II] Coating a non-metallic surface (paper, cardboard, wood) with a layer of lacquer or varnish containing metal particles, removing a part of the coating to expose the metal particles and then building up a metal coating on the exposed metal particles. The part of the coating may be removed by abrading, by use of a solvent, or by use of a chemical reagent which will destroy the lacquer or varnish. The metal particles may be of iron, zinc, copper, brass or lead and should be as small as possible. The varnish or lacquer comprises a solution of natural or synthetic resin-stove enamels are particularly suitable. The top coating may be put on by the use of an acid copper bath. It is preferred that the metal particles comprise at least 20 per cent. by weight of the coating. In an example finely powdered zinc-lead alloy is incorporated in a varnish which is then applied to a surface. The metal particles are exposed and the surface dipped into a solution of copper sulphate in aqueous sulphuric acid.
