Abstract
570,932. Grabs. PRIESTMAN BROS., Ltd and CHILD. A. Sept. 23, 1943, No. 15633. [Class 78 (iv)] In grabs in which the jaws are opened and closed by drawing up and releasing a girder by a chain or rope passing over sheaves on the girder and the supporting head, the girder is fabricated by welding or otherwise and comprises a base member a, two side plates c, d, cheek plates e, g for supporting the spindle n of the sheaves secured in any required angular position, a bar h secured to the upper parts of the side plate and to the cheek plates, and blocks b secured to the base for carrying the stub axles of the grab jaws. The side plates c, d .are cut out to project over the blocks b and to take the ends of the bar h. A plate m is welded to the base a between the cheeks e, g and a cheek f provides a centre support for the sheave spindle n, the cheeks being connected together by bolts with distance pieces l. The sheaves are displaced towards one side of the girder so that the rope or chain passes to the first sheave along the centre line k of the grab, and are set at an angle to give straight runs of the rope &c. to the sheaves in the head. A socket member w forms an attachment for the free end of the cable, and a pin p welded to one of the side plates forms a stop for the grab jaws. When chains are used the cheeks are closed in by a bent plate to form a receptacle for grease in which the sheaves and chain run. The end of the chain may be fixed to the spindle n by a lug t.
