Abstract

570,893. Controlling cooled compressors. MONROE, R. O., and CLAYTON, W. F. Oct. 13, 1943, No. 16814. [Class 8 (i)] The cooling water conduit of a compressor contains a valve opened by fall of the air pressure; the compressor starting means is actuated by the flow of water. Water is supplied from a conduit 20 past a solenoidal valve 22 associated with a valved by-pass 27 to the after-cooler 5 and thence to the jacket of the compressor 1 and so to a drain connection 30. The air is delivered through the after-cooler and a separator 7 to a reservoir 9 fitted with a relief valve and a pressure-responsive switch 15 which on fall of pressure to a due level closes a circuit between the supply mains 32, and operates the solenoid to open the valve 22. The circuit also includes the primary of a transformer 37, the secondary of which is connected with a relay switch 43 in the starting circuit and to an electrode 29 in a fitting 25 at a high part of the water flow, the circuit being completed by the flow of water sinking the electrode; when this occurs, the relay contact 43 is made and the motor starter 34 operated; if the water supply fails, the liquid contact with the electrode is broken by drainage of water away from the fitting, and the current ceasing allows the relay contact 43 to open, and to open the starting contacts 34. If the pressure rises to a fixed point, the contact 15 is opened and the valve 22 closes and the motor is again stopped.
