Abstract

649,960. Engine stop-gear. HEIDE, H.C. (Carrier Corporation). May 25, 1948, No. 14170. [Class 122(iv)] In a safety device for a refrigeration compressor 2 failure of lubricating oil pressure actuates a differential pressure mechanism 12 responsive to the difference between the lubricating oil pressure and crankcase pressure to permit electric current to pass through a heater coil 14 of a time delay relay 13 comprising the heater coil 14 and a switch 15, passage of current through the heater coil beyond a predetermined time interval causing actuation of the switch 15 to discontinue operation of the compressor. In operation a starter mechanism 11, to which the safety device is electrically connected, actuates the compressor motor 10, and energizes a transformer 16 and a current flows through the time delay switch 15, heater coil 14 and a differential pressure mechanism operated switch 12. If a predetermined oil pressure is created within a predetermined time interval the differential pressure switch 12 opens thereby preventing further current flow through the heater coil 14, the time delay switch 15 remains closed and operation continues through the circuit closed by switch 15. If the predetermined oil pressure is not created within the time interval or, if during normal running of the compressor the oil pressure falls and remains below the predetermined figure for more than the predetermined time interval, the current flowing through the heater coil 14 causes it to open the switch 15 and thereby open the motor circuit and discontinue operation of the compressor.
