Abstract

569,573. Finned heat-exchange tubes; feedwater heaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Oct. 20, 1943, No.. 1.7267. Convention date, Jan. 9. [Classes 64 (i) and 64 (iii)] In a tubular heat-exchanger, e.g., an economiser for a steam generator, comprising spaced tubes over: which fluid can flow transversely, each tube is formed with a longitudinal fin projecting in the general direction of fluid flow over the tube, and arow of spaced studs at each side of the fin. The studs are so arranged that, at least in the neighbourhood of the base of each stud, the fluid approaches the stud in an oblique direction and the shortest path for the fluid across the stud is more nearly directed towards the base of the fin than in the path in that oblique direction. In the economiser shown, in additiom.ao: the fin 30 projecting in the general direction of fluid flow there is a second fin 31 projecting in the opposite direction. Each fin is composed of a row of narrow plates spaced by narrow gaps. each plate tapering towards its outer edge. Between the fins are two rows of studs 51-56. Each stud is'of oval cross-section, the major axes of the crosssections lying in planes perpendicular to the axis of the tube. Dimensions are given. The econo. miser, Fig. 13, is composed of rows of horizontal water-tubes 16 arranged in the hot-gas uptake 1 of a water-tube boiler. Pairs of tubes in each row are joined at one end, and at the other end each tube is joined to an adjacent tube in the next row, so as to form a number of sinuous passages, the ends of which are connected to headers 152, 156. The tubes are supported at one end by the engagement of projections such as 184 in openings in a plate or bar 191 mounted at one side of the gas uptake. The bends joining pairs of tubes at the other end are formed with extension pieces such as 200 which engage in holes in a plate or bar 180 to support the tubes at that end. The extension pieces contain removable caps. as described in Specification 565,585 [Group XVIII]. By removing these and the covers 220, 222, access, may be had to the interior of the tubes. Alternatively, the bends at this end may be provided with projections similar to the projections 184, for engagement in the plate 180. A soot blower including a rotatable. tube 203 is provided.
