Abstract
474,212. Jointing tubes to headers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. April 12, 1937, No: 10341. Convention date, April 15, 1936. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Groups XIII and XII] In a tubular structure, e.g. fluid heatexchange apparatus, the ends of a number of tubes are deformed and grouped to provide the contour of a single tube, the individual tube passages being maintained from end to end. Wall tubes as of a radiant superheater are connected to an inlet header 80 through a reducing Y 82 with two branches each receiving a terminal structure of a group of seven tubes 88, 90, provided at their ends with inner flat sides so that six surround the seventh with a hexagonal crosssection. Similar connections are made between groups 100, 102 and a reducing Y 94 and between groups 108, 109 and a third Y 106, a final pair of groups of three tubes being connected to a reduced conduit 116 in the form of a bunch of five tubes surrounding a pentagonal tube. In an embodiment comprising a watertube locomotive boiler furnace the wall, floor, and roof tubes contact with one another except at their ends which are deformed to semicircular shape in cross-section, each pair of contacting tube ends being welded together and to a header wall 52, spaces 50 formed between the tube pairs facilitating this operation.
