569,215. Agglutinated fibrous compositions. PROOFENE MANUFACTURING CO., Inc. Feb. 19, 1943, No. 2811. Convention date, July 16, 1942. Drawings to Specification. [Class 140] [Also in Group III] Fire-proofing coating compositions, which may vary in consistency from that of a paint to that of a soft mortar, comprise a solution of sodium silicate of 40‹ to 47‹ Be, emulsified with a drying oil and a non-volatile mineral oil and a finely-divided filler. Specified drying oils are linseed oil, chinawood oil and dehydrated castor oil, and specified fillers are ground mica and titanium dioxide. In preparing the compositions, the mixed oils may be heated, e.g. to 400‹ F., the other ingredients being subsequently added, with stirring. The composition thus obtained may be thinned with water or with a drying oil to a paint consistency, or it may be coagulated by the addition of alcohol or of an acid, the coagulated mass being dried and formed into granules which are then swollen by heating, these swollen granules being mixed with some of the liquid composition to form a mortar or cement. The fire-proofing compositions may be used for coating wooden walls, plaster board, plywood, sheet metal, steam pipes and boilers, as an adhesive in forming laminated paper, and as a binder for fibres, e.g. of wood, to form fibrous building elements.
