My present invention relatestoanew and improved plastic composition :for heat insulating, such as coveringsfor steam boilers, steam and refrigerator pipes and for-refrigerators, as well asfor plastering walls of dwellings, apartment houses, hotels and :other building structures for securing heat proof and sound proof walls.
The composition of my inventionmay he used as a plaster and applied in the customary manner, or itmaybe made up if desired in sheets or boards, or in tubular sections and .applied according to existing modes for using such articles in building structures or as g coverings for pipes.
The plastic composition consists essentially mixing erisite also cont-emp a es surface-hardener a a i sa e erisite, as raw material in its ,natural .state, is found and mined in ets or books of msipes v c 1 are comparative y .light in weigi in proportion to their size, and after roasting or bakin in anoven or other suitable place for heat treatment, a given weight of the material .expands or increases in "size, and decreases in weight as the moisture is removed therefrom. After exfoliatio bv bakin or roasting the jefieriite retains its Book or leaf'fohh'l ffi onybut the 'books are so "light and fragile that :the anaterial may be crushedto powder form or :pul-
.verized into a :flaky mass between the fingers of the hand.
Thus .the roasted jefierisite is finely rendered or .comminuted in .a suitable mill to 40 form .a .iine flaky powder ,which has a color zblending from a gold to asilver hue. vgmaterial asthus prepared is especially adapt- .,ed for use as a heat insulating element in the ,a M I. pla e Lplastic compositi a .45 for that purpose. I "The pulp, which may be obtained Joy maceratinFeither waste paper orprepared wood,is
the plastic composition.

lastic composition, after the jefierisite has en exfoliated =by' roasting or "baking and .finely com u l '0 't is lac with th e pulp in a sutable vessel an ,of water added. "The materials are then 'pla"st1c,.massor composition, w i'c'h Bantu Lreadyifor application in plastic condition as.
a substitute for various heat insulating ma- -ter1a1s used on-hot or cold pipes such as steam .and hot water pipes or-refrigerator pipes, and
on furnaces, steam' boilers, etc. The two ma terials 'used in approximately the same relatlve qproport-ionsfwhich may be Naried limits, when the plaster is to beus ed as a covering or .heatinsulator alone.
-( thus only"slightly increasing the weight of a covered @pipe .or other tubular structure) and forms aniexcellent insulating medium against the transmission of heat.
*In the preparation of the plastic composi-' tion for use as awall plaster for 'u's'e'on laths in Xlwellings other building structures, ,or as a plaster board for that purpose, in at'l ii I'1--to qualities as a heat insulator, gthe plasticcompo'sition also forms a sound ,proof material against the transmission of sound waves. To provide this quality in the plastic material .a binder and surface-hardener, such as sodium silicate, is in some instances added ;to the two first mentioned ingredients as they aregbeing mixed, and the binder --thoroughly incorporated and mixed with the wet ingredients .to form a plastic anaterial.
this condition the plaster or plastic comyithe .use oia trowel or other implement and applied to ithe lathing and spread or flowed t e requiredquantlty won in usual manner. When the wall thus prepared dries by evaporation of the moist- 11m in the plastic materiahthe exposed surface of the wall is found to 'be hard and I 5 tough, while the interior or core of the wall is less hard. The surfacepresentsa glazed appearance with a darker golden'hue than that obtained imthe mixture of jefiersite pulp alone-and" this surface can be used as the finished surface of the plasteredwall, er"

if desired.
This hard, glazed, or glassy appehring szir face adds the sound-proof quality to the plas- V 15 tered wall, in addition to' its heat insulating quality, and the hard .glazed surface is instrumental 'in'reflecting or defiec sound waves that may strike it, which spun waves are thus prevented from'being transmitted through the wall. These qualities as a heat- .00 lowing ,p'rop0rti0nsmay be stated.
' These proportions may however be varied '4 insulating wall and asa-sound proof wall adapt the plastic composition or plaster especially for use in dwellings, hotels, apartments and other building structures where it 35 is desirable to use sound proof material in -the walls. l
As an example of the formula used in'the preparation of the heat proof and sound proof plaster or plastic composition, the fol- Percent e u'l'o wood or n- 35 within limits to suit difi'erent conditions or uses to which the plastic poin'p'ositionis to be adapted. p
Having thus fullyt'described my invention,
Letters Patent is what I claimasnew and desire to secure 1. A plastic composition comprising foliated and pulverized jefi'erisite, a pulp filler, and a binder. f
2. The process of forming a plastic compositiou which consists in exfoliating je fierisite by roasting, finely .comminuting the exfoliated material, mixing said material with a pulp in the presence of water audadding a binder material to the mixture.
In'testimony whereof Iafiix my JALIES KEETH.
