Abstract

568,935. Paper &c. containers. O'NEIL, J. G., and ZESBAUGH, L. G. Aug. 18, 1943, No. 13436. [Classes 66 and 125 (iii)] A tubular container for liquids, powders and the like comprises inner and outer contacting layers 21, 22 of paper or the like and a substantially rigid ring 23, preferably made of paper material, seated on a shoulder formed by a contracted portion 25. The body of the container may be formed by winding a blank 20, Fig. 5, upon a mandrel, carrying the ring 23 covered with adhesive, and securing the overlapping edges 20f, 20g by' adhesive. The blank may be treated to render it oil-, grease- or water-proof and is provided with a series of pairs of vertical scores 20d and a pair of horizontal scores 20c between horizontal scores 20a so that crimps 24 are formed by contraction in a press. As shown, the ring is bevelled at 23a, 23b. The upper end of the body is rolled or crimped inwardly with the layers in contact and the lower end is folded inwardly and secured by adhesive to the flange 26a of a bottom member 26, small folds 27 being formed in the inner layer due to scores 20e. In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown), the upper and lower end of each layer is folded back on itself, the folded upper end of the inner layer being secured to the outer surface of a plain ring and a flanged bottom member resting on the upturned lower end of the inner layer. A cover 40, Fig. 16, may be forced into the container to seat on the ring 23 and its flange 40d rolled or spun over the end of the container. The cover is formed with a score 40c extending between diametrically-disposed notches in its flange so that half of the cover may be swung upwardly about the score for obtaining access to the contents.
