Abstract

Apparatus for liquid treatment of a running <PICT:0568893/IV/1> <PICT:0568893/IV/2> length of a single or multiple strand filament, particularly an artificial filament during or shortly after its formation by extrusion or coagulation, comprises means for forming an inclined running length of the filament, means for projecting a jet of liquid therealong in a direction making a small angle with the course of the filament, and means adjacent to said course for receiving spillage from the filament. In the form shown in Fig. 1, as the filament 2 passes in an upward, inclined course from roll 3 to roll 4, e.g. in a spinning machine or a machine designed solely for the liquid treatment, it receives liquid directed upwardly from a nozzle 5 in substantial alignment with said course, surplus liquid leaving the filament higher up being received in a basin 7 with discharge pipe 8 leading either to the supply for the jet or to waste. The height of the point of discharge may be controlled by varying the pressure of the jet or the inclination of the filament. The nozzle may be grooved as at 6, Fig. 3, to guide the filament in alignment with the jet. The liquid may be hot water or a solvent or swelling agent to facilitate stretching of the filament, or a liquid for removing impurities, e.g. a desulphurising agent in the case of a viscose filament, or for regenerating, coagulating, or further precipitating the filament, or a washing, softening, lubricating, static-eliminating, or other conditioning agent. The jet may be directed downwardly along an upwardly or downwardly moving filament, and it may be necessary to provide a filament-wiping roller (preferably rotated, with a doctor to wipe the roller), or a stationary curved guide, adjacent to the basin 7 to divert the surplus from the filament to the basin. Several units such as that shown may be arranged side by side as a unitary structure, the several jets being fed from a common supply pipe 9.
