Abstract
568,827. Electric blankets. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 1, 1943, No. 16105. Convention date, Oct. 1, 1942. [Class 40 (i)] In a system in which the heating circuit of an electric blanket is periodically opened and closed by a thermal switch which comprises a bimetallic strip 9 exposed to the ambient temperature and co-operating with a contact 10, the strip being heated by a coil 11 while the circuit is closed, an adjustable rheostat 14 is arranged to be connected in parallel with the coil 11 at predetermined times of the day by means of a clock-driven slider 18 so as to decrease the effect of a given blanket current on the bimetallic strip and thus increase the heat input to the blanket. As shown, the rheostat 14 consists of a resistance wire 16 wound on one quadrant of a ring 17 in series with a flat contact 20 occupying an adjacent quadrant. The slider 18 makes a revolution in twenty-four hours, so that in a period of twelve hours the shunt resistance is gradually reduced for the first six hours and is then maintained at its minimum value. The ring 17 is adjustable to determine when the shunt is to be operative. The shunt may also include a threeposition rheostat 23 by which the user may determine whether the additional heat shall be a small, medium or large increase over the normal.
