The motor 3 is series wound or has a predominantly series characteristic and may lie in series with a low voltage battery 5. When the shoe 1 passes over a gap in the conductor rail, the generator 6 provides energy to the traction motor, and the battery 5, if provided, maintains the machine 3 in a motoring condition and so aids the effect of the fly-wheel. According to the Provisional Specification, the machine 3 is shunt wound.
