Abstract
568,816. Apparatus for vacuum impregnation. GENERAL ENGINEERING CO. (RADCLIFFE), Ltd., and TAYLOR, S. May 31, 1944, No. 10432. [Class 140] Apparatus for impregnating articles under vacuum comprises an evacuable vessel containing a plurality of alternative conditioning means, and means including one or more pumps and/or one or more valves connected by conduits to the conditioning means, for selectively passing impregnant through one or more of the conditioning means. As shown, an evacuable vessel 50 with heating jacket 51 contains a filter 62, a heat-interchanger 54, a dehydrating sprayer 74. pumps 52 and 53 and a system of conduits and valves, whereby the impregnant may be passed through one or more of the filter, heat - exchanger and dehydrating sprayer. A number of alternative routes are described in detail in the Specification. The valves may be operable from outside the vessel and further conduits may be provided whereby the impregnant may be received from a raw impregnant storage tank, and, after treatment, transferred to another vessel in which the impregnation is effected. The impregnant may be put under pressure in the impregnation vessel and circulated while still under pressure in the impregnation vessel, through one or more of the conditioning means in vessel 50. The application of pressure is facilitated, and the pressure controlled, by a hydraulic accumulator 77 mounted on top of the vessel 50. The heat-interchanger 54 has flanged connections 57, 58 for circulation of cold water or steam for cooling or heating the impregnant, and is provided with a jacket 55 evacuated through stand-pipe 56 to insulate the heat-interchanger from the contents of the vessel 50. The dehydrating sprayer comprises a rotary hollow member 74 having peripheral holes 120 through which the impregnant passes from the interior of a fixed housing 76 on to a screen 75. The hydraulic accumulator comprises a piston-head 78 displaceable up bore 79 by liquid under pressure against the action of weights 80. The accumulator has a vacuum-tight cover 82 provided with a flange 83 constituting the vacuum connection for the whole of the vessel 50, the interior of the cover 82 communicating with the top of vessel 50 through ports 84. Shield 75 prevents the impregnant mist produced by the sprayer from being pumped off through the vacuum connection. The apparatus may be used for impregnating electrical transformers, condensers, or parts thereof, with transformer oil, paraffiin wax or a mixture of rosin and oil.
