568,791. Latch fastenings. SANDFORD, H. W. March 12, 1943, No. 4067. Convention date, Feb. 25, 1942. [Class 44] [Also in Group XXXIII Latch means 18 for holding a dropbottom rear door 12, which also controls the forward doors, is placed in the protected position shown in Fig. 4 above the door so as to be accessible for release by a lever 28 pivoted in the track and engaging a boss 26 on the lower end of the latch 18, pivoted transversely at 19, so as to knock back the latch to disengage a hook 21 on the door from its concave seat 20 in the latch, the lever 28 is raised to the active position shown by a counterweighted pivoted upright lever-arm 35 pushed forwardly by a lug 45 on a side-sill of the wagon so as to rotate pivoted parts 41, 36 to raise lever 28 through an interposed spring 38; a pin 22 for manual release by an inserted lever is provided on the latch. A pivoted lever 28a, shown in Fig. 6 in the inactive position resting on a stop 34, is raised by the action of lug 45a on x spring plunger carried by the pivoted connected parts 35a, 36a directly acting upon lever 28a. Other forms of latches, including laterally-springing ones, are also described. In the construction shown in Fig. 14 the door 12d is lifted by a ramp 67 engaging a pad 66 on the door underside, the latch 18d being withdrawn by a wire brush 66.
