Abstract

<PICT:0568571/IV/1> <PICT:0568571/IV/2> Plasticisers are incorporated with synthetic linear polyamides by passing separate streams of the heated plasticiser and molten polyamide into a hot zone where they are mixed with mechanical agitation at a temperature not substantially below the melting point of the polymer. The polyamide, melted in a hopper 1 heated by coil 2, and the plasticiser in a tank 10 are fed through lines 7, 13 into opposite ends of a mixer 8, Fig. 2, provided with rotating blades 15 and heated by enclosure in a jacket 14. The homogenised mixture passes through a filter 19 containing layers of elutriated sand of particle size decreasing in the direction of flow into an extrusion head 20 from which a film of the plasticised polymer is extruded on to a rotating casting wheel 22 cooled by a spray of water 25. Coated fabric may be produced by passing a layer of fabric under the extrusion head. Plasticisers specified include diphenyloloctadecane, amyl benzene sulphonamide, N-ethyl toluene sulphonamide, high boiling phenols, e.g. amyl and octyl phenols, diphenylolpropane, and high boiling amides, phthalyl butyl glycolate.
